Review of The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston

Winter in Pennsylvania isn’t the sunniest of times, and after the holidays it feels like a wash of grey had covered the landscape. On those days, I find myself bundled under covers whenever I’m not out, and seeking recluse in good food and cozy evenings inside. For those moments, I crave a book that is light, a beach read without the beach! I wasn’t sure what to pick up until my daughter, who’s one step away from being an amateur librarian, recommended The Seven Year Slip.

The storyline covers a time-travelling romance between two lovers, Clementine, a book publisher, and Iwan, an aspiring chef. It is primarily set in Clementine’s apartment which she inherited from her world-travelling fashionista aunt. This book is an easy and interesting read, that kept the vibe light and fun despite touching at times on the topic of lost love and lost loved ones. It’s perfect for a summer beach read or on a cold winters day where you need a little sunshine.

While at times predictable, the love story of Iwan and Clementine keeps you on your toes and wanting to know if they end up together. The author manages to include time travelling in the book without it feeling disingenuous or too over the top. (I promise to not give any big spoilers in ANY of my book reviews!) If anything, I found the aunts storyline to be the most intriguing and would have loved to hear more about Aunt Analea and her life and loves. Analea reads as the kind of woman you simply want to be around. One with whom you’d start the day brunching but don’t end up back home until the next day, with new friends and stories under your belt. I also love the inclusion of lesbian couples which are often neglected in hetero based novels.
