With the first full week of school officially underway this week, it sure feels like we are back to school! With the transition from summer activities to our school year schedule also comes the excitement of meeting the kids new teachers, visiting the classrooms and learning what is on the agenda for learning! My kids started a new school this September, so the anticipation of these things seemed doubled, along with adding on meeting new friends and neighbors!
After going to both of my children’s Back To School Nights, I became even more excited for the school year ahead. I got on SignUp Genius and registered as a “Party Planner Room Parent”, started rooting through all the paperwork, and made sure we had a good space at home for homework and for the papers and projects that seem to fly through my kitchen on a regular basis.
One aspect of school that is particularly engaging and exciting especially now that my children are in 2nd and 4th grades is Science class and all the experiments and projects done throughout the year. This year in my son’s class their unit of study focuses on measuring the wind where students are challenged to design a wind anemometer that will measure the wind. I’ve always encouraged my kids to get outside and we love looking at the sky and predicting what will come next with the constantly changing weather we have here in Pennsylvania. I’m excited for him and his classmates to take on this project and can’t wait to see my little guy turn into a miniature weather man!
In the classroom, my kids have made miniature volcanoes using household materials, learned about snow and how precipitation is formed then made snowmen outside, and constructed individual study projects put on display in the school. It is exciting to watch them use science as a way to understand why water turns into ice, why condensation forms on windows, and why their magnets will stick to our metal refrigerator but not to a plastic appliance. These every day connections help them better understand what is happening in their worlds and that there is reason for why things happen, not just “because.” As a parent, I enjoy watching those connections happen as their minds grow and their love of learning only continues to grow along with their curiosity!
Education and supporting STEM in our school is so important and it warms my heart to see companies supporting STEM education and hands-on educational opportunities in the classroom. Orkin’s Start with Science initiative provides materials to classrooms in need which makes these science projects not just a hope but a reality. Mommy Entourage is so excited to share their efforts and offer one reader a chance to receive a donation gift card to give to the project of their choosing!
As of date, Orkin has donated over $325,000 in funding to over 1,400 projects and counting. Teachers create a Donorschoose.org project and explain what they are doing in their classroom and receive donations via the website. To donate to the project of your choice, visit orkin.com/learningcenter/start-with-science/
It was heart warming to be able to support classrooms in need through the Orkin Start with Science initiative. I was able to donate to a special needs classroom in need of technology in a school where there was no funding for an iPad and also help a 1st grade classroom obtain necessary supplies so that the teacher can have students create, learn, and do STEM work while their little minds grow. As a mom of two kids in public school, I know just how important having access to technology and the necessary teaching supplies are! It was fun to look through the profiles and find ones that fit my personal educational goals, and the projects are searchable by geographical location as well!
Are you interested in the Orkin Start with Science initiative? Mommy Entourage would love to gift one lucky reader $50 to donate to the school/project of their choosing. Leave a comment below telling me your favorite aspect of STEM education or how STEM is important to your family! One winner will receive a $50 gift code and will be chosen on September 25, 2016 and notified via email.
