Burn Brae Day Camp of Creative Arts is a place filled with imagination, creativity and inspiration. On any given day there are campers rehearsing lines and singing show tunes on stage, musicians learning the latest popular jam, budding writers learning new ways to express themselves on paper, and the latest technology in use at the hands of TV/video Majors. You can feel it in the air- the spark of creativity as young minds expand their horizons.
In addition to the traditional camp activities Burn Brae is known to orchestrate without a hitch, twice every summer is the ever-popular event, Arts Fest. During the bi-seasonal Arts Fest events, the lush camp grounds are open to family and friends of campers to come and witness the cumulative efforts over the weeks spent at camp. Arts Fest runs all afternoon, with refreshments and programs provided to guide you throughout the day.
This year at Arts Fest, the Theater department showcased popular Broadway show tunes performed with professional accompaniment and performed to “a T.” I thoroughly enjoyed hearing my favorites like “Popular” from the smash hit Wicked, classic favorites from Bye Bye Birdie and renditions of Godspell and Shrek the Musical. You’d be amazed at the vocal range, stage presence and amount of fun it was to watch the shows performed this season so far!
Live on stage the entire event were musical performances by Burn Brae’s own Jazz Band and Rock Band, as well as strings and woodwinds from all age performers. Jazz Band is always so impressive and the private stage gives the audience the feel of an outdoor concert. The Rock Band showcased tunes ranging from alt rock band Weezer to pop sensation Meghan Trainor. I always love to see the guys and girls blast vocals, jam out on their guitars and drum sets, and really get into the music. At Burn Brae, campers are encouraged to express themselves through music while under the expert guidance of the musicians who run the department.
The Art Department hosted an art gallery style showcase for visitors to peruse and enjoy at their leisure. On the walls were city scapes and multi-dimensional art, allowing you to see two completely different visual images depending on where you were standing and viewing the work. The message here was that there is always more than one way to look at things – change your direction, change your perspective! Teaching our youth to think with open minds is key.
Displayed in the gallery were glazed and finished ceramic works that were completely created on site at Burn Brae, where they have their own kiln to fire artwork. Campers start with a basic ball of clay and under the instruction of the Art Department, are guided into creating finished works which they mold, carve, paint and glaze. It is amazing to watch the process done and to see the pride of completion in the eyes of all the kids who proudly displayed their works. After the exhibit is finished, families are allowed to take home the pieces made by their children. Mine just happened to be my birthday present from my daughter this year! I absolutely love it!
Other impressive highlights included a fashion show from Project Runway with original outfits crafted from basic clothing essentials, dance routines showcasing hip-hop, ballet, tap and show tunes, and a take home booklet of original works from the Creative Writing Department.
Pastry Arts displayed a colorful, imaginative and delicious display of edibles made on site! It was refreshing to see such a diverse array of talents showcased and to see families watch this first hand at Arts Fest.
To round out the event, there was also an athletic element to the day with gaga games being played, swim times for parents to see the advancement in the pool of their children, and archery demonstrations performed. Burn Brae not only has their own archery range, basketball courts and baseball fields but also has their own ever-popular gaga pit!
