February in Pennsylvania has been a tough one, with massive snow and ice storms from Winter Storms Nika and Pax ravaging the East Coast, causing massive and widespread power outages. My home is heated and powered solely by electric which means that when the power goes out, pretty much everything goes out with it including our heat. We were so lucky this time around because the storms only temporarily affected us but so many of our neighbors were not as lucky. Ice burdened trees fell on houses, crashing through the roof of one of my sons classmates. Power lines were down everywhere causing dangerous driving conditions and widespread power outages leaving families in very cold homes and nothing but flashlights and candles to light up their dark rooms. Homes were dropping to dangerously low temperatures and not everyone had a family member with a heated home to take their families to.
With hundreds of thousands of people on the East Coast without warm homes or electricity, the American Red Cross set up shelters open to the public. Shelters in Pennsylvania offered people a warm place to go and get a hot meal, healthy snack, and water along with a place to charge their cell phones and devices, despite being run on generators. I was so glad to hear that so many families were able to take shelter there, many of the families with young children. Pets were also welcomed to come in from the cold. Our thanks and appreciation go out to all of the volunteers on hand to help and to the American Red Cross for helping our local community. Below is a picture taken near my aunts home in Bucks County showing the damage still there even after power was restored and roads plowed multiple times.
With so many homes damaged we’ve had to reflect on what the storm has done to our local community and it reminds me of just how important those I love and what I care about mean to me. My two children are my #1 priority first and foremost. Second to my children, we treasure family photos and keepsakes which can be rare and often hard to come by as many of them are before the age of digital cameras. My darling daughter values her American Girl dolls more than anything and they are valuable both monetarily and for sentimental reasons.
