I think it is normal for kids to have the back-to-school jitters and that most kids experience it at one point or another. Today we visited an open house at my daughters school and was given a fun idea for how to make those back-to-school jitters go away.
The teachers had placed plastic baggies filled with multi-colored glitter in them and told the students to take home their “Jitter Glitter” and sprinkle the glitter under their pillow the night before they were to start school and that the “Jitter Glitter” would take away their worries and anxiety about the first day.
I can already imagine the heads of most of my daughter’s classmates matted with various shades of glitter on the first day and probably a lot of vacuuming and pillowcase washing by the moms, but think the idea is clever and fresh. I’m thinking of trying it out at home for our first day!
Other suggestions I have thought of are creating a special calming drink of warm milk or chamomile tea mixed with “magic” honey or a swirl of chocolate. A special sleepy-time bedtime story might do the trick as well. Other less messy substitutions for glitter might include fancy colorful feathers, a special drawing your child makes themselves about their first day, or small craft kit gems your daughter may have from art class. If you have boys, Superhero dust or Batman’s beads are substitution suggestions for something creative to hide under the pillowcase. Just be careful with small objects if you have a young one or small animal in the home!
