Our family loves to find a new Christmas CD to listen to every year as we decorate our tree. I strive to find something family-friendly and also centered on Christmas music. Somehow listening to the radio just doesn’t cut it! This year we were lucky enough to find a beautiful Frazier fir from a local farm and have the enchanting CD Celtic Christmas by Putumayo Music to listen to while trimming the tree.
The collection, available in CD or MP3 formats includes eleven songs from Ireland, Scotland, England, Canada, and the USA. Lasairirfhíona Ní Chonaola’s “Nollaig Bhan (White Christmas)” is a beautifully sung rendition that needed no translation and pulled on my heartstrings. Steve Schuch & Night Heron Consort’s “Joy to the World” was peppy and stuck in my head for hours. Celtic Christmas ends with Dougie MacLean’s “Auld Lang Syne” and was a fitting end to a melodic compilation.
From the beginning to end, we loved this collection. As a mom, I liked that a lot of the songs were soothing and the livelier ones were optimistic and crisp. My kids took turns dancing and waving their arms around and asked me to play it a second time when it was done. For me, that’s a win-win!
